Textures are the key to making some really great mixed media in Adobe Photoshop. Subtle textures can add so much to an altered image. In fact I keep a folder on my desktop of photos I take specifically for this reason. Having many different textures to choose from is great, but if you don’t take your own photos than check out this website that has a wide range of free high resolution textures.
